Sample space diagram
A table that organises possible outcomes, often with one event along the top and another down the side.
Sample statistic
A numerical value calculated from sample data, such as a sample proportion or sample mean.
Sampling frame
A list or other record of the members of a population from which a sample can be selected.
Sampling variation
The natural difference between results obtained from different samples taken from the same population.
SAS
Information consisting of two side lengths and the included angle between them.
Scalar
An ordinary number used to multiply a vector, changing its magnitude and possibly reversing its direction.
Scale
A statement comparing a length on a drawing or map with the corresponding real length.
Scale diagram
A drawing in which lengths represent real lengths using a consistent scale.
Scale drawing
A drawing in which lengths represent real lengths in a fixed proportion.
Scale factor
The multiplier used to change each length in a shape or drawing to its corresponding length in another.
Scalene triangle
A triangle with three different side lengths.
Scaling factor
A power of 10 such as 10, 100 or 1000, used to scale both numbers in a decimal division without changing the quotient.
Scatter diagram
A graph on which paired values of two variables are plotted as separate points.
Scatter graph
A graph that plots each pair of values as a point to show how two variables may be related.
Seasonal variation
A pattern of rises and falls that repeats at regular times, such as each year.
Secondary data
Data that was originally collected by somebody else or for another purpose.
Second difference
The difference between consecutive first differences.
Second differences
The differences between consecutive first differences.
Sector
The region of a circle enclosed by two radii and the arc joining their endpoints.
Segment
A region of a circle bounded by a chord and an arc.
Segment of a circle
A region of a circle bounded by a chord and an arc of the circumference.
Selling price
The amount received when an item is sold.
Semicircle
Half of a circle, formed when a diameter divides the circle into two equal regions.
Sense of rotation
The direction of a rotation: clockwise or anti-clockwise.
Sequence
An ordered list of numbers or other objects whose terms follow a rule.
Sequence of transformations
Two or more transformations applied one after another in a specified order.
Set
A collection of distinct elements, usually written inside braces such as {1, 2, 3}.
Set notation
Notation that describes a collection of values inside curly brackets, usually with a condition after a colon.
Side elevation
An elevation obtained by looking directly at the object from a specified side.
Sign change
A change from a positive value of to a negative value, or vice versa, between two input values.
