Function notation f(x)
Notation for the output of function fff when its input is xxx.
Geometric progression
A sequence in which each term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by the same number.
Geometric proof
A chain of statements in which each step follows from given information or an established mathematical fact, establishing that a result must be true.
Geometric sequence
A pattern in which consecutive terms have a constant multiplicative ratio.
Gradient
The change in yyy divided by the corresponding change in xxx between two points on a line.
Graphical solution
A value found from a graph rather than exactly by algebra, so its accuracy is limited by the scale and drawing.
Graph of a function
The set of points representing a function on coordinate axes, usually written in the form y=f(x)y=f(x)y=f(x).
Grouped data
Data presented in classes or intervals rather than as individual values.
Growth
A change in which a quantity increases over time, often by the same proportion or percentage in each period.
Hectare
An area equal to 10,000 square metres, commonly used for measuring land.
Highest common factor
The greatest factor shared by every term in an expression.
Highest common factor (HCF)
The greatest whole number that divides exactly into each of two or more numbers.
Hundredth
One of one hundred equal parts of a whole; the second place to the right of the decimal point.
Hypotenuse
The longest side of a right-angled triangle, opposite its right angle.
Identity
An equality that is true for every permissible value of its variables.
Image
The shape produced by a transformation.
Improper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is greater than its denominator, so its value is greater than 111.
Included angle
An angle formed by two given sides; it lies between those sides.
Included angle or side
The angle between two specified sides, or the side between two specified angles.
Inclusive inequality
An inequality using ⩽\leqslant⩽ or ⩾\geqslant⩾, in which the boundary value is included.
Income tax
Tax paid on taxable income, such as earnings.
Independent events
Events for which knowing that one has occurred does not change the probability of the other.
Index
The small raised number in a power; it tells you how many copies of the base are multiplied together. In x5x^5x5, the index is 555.
Inequality
An inequality compares expressions using <<<, >>>, ≤\leq≤ or ≥\geq≥ rather than stating that they are equal.
Instantaneous rate of change
The gradient at one particular point on a curve, representing the rate of change at that instant.
Integer
A whole number, including zero and negative whole numbers, such as 444, 000 or −7-7−7.
Intercept
The point where a graph crosses an axis.
Interest rate
A percentage used to calculate interest on money saved or borrowed for a stated period.
Interior angle
An angle formed between two sides at a vertex, measured inside a polygon.
