AQA GCSE Combined Science: Synergy key terms

One of two perpendicular forces that together have the same effect as a single original force.

A material made by combining materials to obtain a useful combination of properties.

A substance containing two or more different elements chemically combined.

A region of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are closer together.

A solution containing a relatively large amount of dissolved substance per unit volume of solution.

The amount of a substance in a given volume.

A difference in the concentration of a substance between two regions.

The change of water vapour into liquid water.

Energy transfer through a material from a hotter region to a colder region, without the material moving as a whole.

A material through which electric charge can flow; a metal wire is an electrical conductor.

The protection and management of species, habitats and natural resources.

The principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred between stores.

The rule that no atoms are lost or made during a chemical reaction, so the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants.

The principle that the total momentum before an event equals the total momentum after it in a closed system.

A force arising from an interaction between objects that are physically touching.

Repeatedly removing small samples from a reaction mixture at regular intervals to monitor its progress.

The use of hormonal or non-hormonal methods to prevent pregnancy.

A factor kept constant so that its effect does not interfere with the investigation.

The agreed direction of current through an external circuit: from the positive terminal of the supply towards its negative terminal.

A part of a control system that receives and processes information and coordinates an appropriate response.

An artery that supplies the heart muscle with blood containing oxygen and nutrients.

A condition in which fatty material builds up inside the coronary arteries, narrowing them and reducing blood flow to the heart muscle.

A relationship in which two quantities change together; this alone does not establish that one causes the other.

The unit of electrical charge, symbol C. One coulomb passes a point when a current of one ampere flows for one second.

The number of decays recorded each second by a detector, such as a Geiger–Müller tube.

A strong bond between atoms formed by sharing a pair of electrons.

The breakdown of larger hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more useful molecules using heat, either with a catalyst or with steam.
