Revise: Assembling MethodsAlternatively, a bolt can pass through unthreaded holes and engage with a separate nut. This distinction affects the tools, material thickness and access needed for assembly.

A threaded fastener normally used with a nut to clamp components together.
A tapping hole is smaller than the nominal thread diameter. Use a tapping-size table rather than assuming the bolt diameter is the drilling diameter.
Do not describe every bolt as partly threaded. Bolts generally have a plain section below the head, but designs vary.
Distinguish the jobs of components: a bolt and nut secure parts, a washer spreads load, a hinge allows movement and a catch holds a closure shut.

A temporary joint can be undone and reassembled without damaging the parts; nuts and bolts or removable screws can provide this.
