A fitting that connects two components while allowing one to pivot relative to the other.
Revise: Assembling ComponentsHinges and knock-down connectors are specialist examples; screws and nails are common fasteners. The choice affects strength, appearance, manufacturing time and whether repairs or dismantling will be possible.

Justify a fitting by linking its properties to the product: for example, a piano hinge supports a long lid along its length.
Distinguish a hinge, which allows movement, from a fitting that holds two components rigidly together.
Distinguish the jobs of components: a bolt and nut secure parts, a washer spreads load, a hinge allows movement and a catch holds a closure shut.
