An insoluble white compound, , formed when barium ions react with sulfate ions in solution.
Barrier coating
A protective layer that keeps substances in the environment from reaching the material beneath it.
Base
A particle that accepts a proton in a proton-transfer reaction.
Baseline
The starting line on chromatography paper where samples are placed.
Base peak
The tallest peak in a mass spectrum, assigned a relative abundance of 100.
Basis of comparison
The common basis on which products are compared, such as one bag, one use or the entire working life of an appliance.
Batch process
Manufacture in which a fixed quantity of product is made at one time before the equipment is prepared for another run.
Battery
Two or more cells connected together, normally in series to provide a greater total voltage.
Bauxite
An aluminium-rich ore from which aluminium oxide is obtained for aluminium extraction.
Benefit
A helpful or desirable outcome for an individual, group or the environment.
Best-fit curve
A smooth line or curve drawn to represent the overall pattern of plotted data.
Best-fit line or curve
A line or smooth curve drawn to represent the overall pattern of experimental results rather than joining every point mechanically.
Bias
A tendency for the selection or presentation of evidence to favour a particular conclusion.
Binary
Containing only two different elements.
Binary compound
A compound made from two different elements.
Binary ionic compound
An ionic compound containing only two different elements, usually a metal and a non-metal.
Bioaccumulation
The gradual increase in the amount of a substance within organisms over time.
Biodegradable
Able to be broken down naturally by microorganisms.
Biodiversity
The variety of different living organisms in an area or across Earth.
Bioleaching
A biological extraction method in which bacteria help produce a leachate solution containing dissolved metal compounds.
Biological treatment
The use of microorganisms to break down biodegradable organic matter in wastewater.
Bitumen
A thick crude oil fraction used as a surfacing material for roads and roofs.
Bleaching
The chemical removal of colour from a substance.
Blue litmus paper
Indicator paper coloured with litmus that changes from blue to red under acidic conditions.
Boiling
The change of state from a liquid to a gas throughout the liquid, with bubbles forming.
Boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid boils and changes to a gas throughout the liquid.
Bond breaking
The separation of particles that were joined by a chemical bond; energy must be supplied for this to happen.
Bond energy
The energy required to break one mole of a specified type of chemical bond; it is usually given in kJ/mol.
Bonding and structure
The type of attraction that joins particles and the pattern in which those particles are organised.
Bonding pair
A pair of electrons shared between two atoms; it represents one covalent bond.
