AQA GCSE Combined Science: Synergy key terms

An instrument containing a small bar magnet that can turn to align with the local magnetic field.

A region in which a magnetic material, magnet or current-carrying conductor can experience a magnetic force.

The direction of the force that would act on a north pole placed at a particular point in a magnetic field.

A line used to represent a magnetic field. Its arrow shows the direction in which the north pole of a compass needle points; closer lines represent a stronger field.

A measure of magnetic field strength, represented by $B$ and measured in tesla, T. More closely spaced field lines represent a greater magnetic flux density.

A material, such as iron, steel, cobalt or nickel, that is attracted to a magnet.

A place on a magnet where the magnetic force is strongest. Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole.

A change in the direction of Earth's global magnetic field so that its north and south magnetic polarities exchange.

How many times larger an image is than the real object: $M = I/A$.

The size of a quantity. The magnitude of velocity is speed.

A cancerous tumour whose cells can invade neighbouring tissues and spread in the blood to other parts of the body.

Able to be hammered or bent into shape without breaking.

A measure of the amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms (kg). Moving an unchanged object to a different gravitational field does not change its mass.

The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.

A dull, non-shiny surface finish.

An average calculated by adding the values and dividing by the number of values.

The quantity of reactant used or product formed during a time interval, divided by the time taken.

A manufactured replacement heart valve made from artificial materials.

An energy transfer pathway in which a force does work by moving an object.

A substance through which a wave travels, such as air, water or glass.

The type of cell division involved in forming gametes.

The change of a solid into a liquid.

The temperature at which a substance changes between solid and liquid at a given pressure.

A white blood cell that remains after an initial immune response and enables a rapid response when the same pathogen enters again.

The curved surface of a liquid in a container. For water in a measuring cylinder, read the bottom of this curve at eye level.

The repeating sequence in which an egg matures and is released, and the uterus lining builds up, is maintained and breaks down if pregnancy does not occur.

The breakdown and shedding of the uterus lining, which leaves the body through the vagina.
