A diagram that represents frequencies using repeated pictures or symbols whose values are given by a key.
Revise: Statistical Charts for Categorical DataA pictogram replaces bars with repeated symbols. It has no numerical axes, so its key is essential. If one complete symbol represents 2 pupils, four complete symbols represent 8 pupils.
Always read a pictogram key before counting symbols, and include the value of any partial symbol.
When reading a pictogram, apply the key to every symbol, including partial symbols. Do not count the symbols as individual items unless the key says one symbol represents one item.
Identify the data type before choosing a chart: categories suit bar charts, pie charts and pictograms; exact discrete numerical values suit vertical line charts.

For ungrouped discrete numerical data, a frequency table or vertical line chart can display the frequency at each exact value. “Ungrouped” means that the values have not been combined into intervals.
