Frequency table

A frequency table provides the starting point for the charts in this lesson. List each category once, record responses with tally marks if helpful, and then count the tallies to obtain the frequency. The sum of the frequencies should equal the total number of responses.

A frequency table turns a long list of results into counts that are easier to describe and analyse.

For categorical data, a frequency table, bar chart, pie chart or pictogram may be appropriate. For ungrouped discrete numerical data, a frequency table or vertical line chart can display the frequency at each exact value. “Ungrouped” means that the values have not been combined into intervals.
