The Macedonian heavy infantry known as the Foot Companions, who fought with sarissas in the phalanx.

The core Macedonian infantry were the pezhetairoi, meaning ‘Foot Companions’. Around 9,000 accompanied Alexander into Asia, organised into six units called taxeis. These units could operate separately or together in a larger formation.
