Revise: Composition, Weapons and Armour of the Macedonian ArmyThe hypaspists, or shield-bearers, were elite infantry selected and trained for demanding tasks. Armed with shorter spears rather than the phalanx’s long sarissas, they were more mobile. They commonly stood between the phalanx and the cavalry on the right, helping protect the infantry’s exposed flank and connect formations moving at different speeds.
