A histogram of approximately normal data follows this general pattern, although its bars need not be perfectly symmetrical.

A normal distribution is symmetrical and bell-shaped: the tallest bars are near the centre, with heights generally decreasing towards both ends. Most observations cluster around the centre, with relatively few very low or very high values. A histogram of sampled measurements may only approximately resemble this shape.
