Ensign

Iago is Othello’s ensign, or standard-bearer, and Emilia’s husband. His military position places him close to the general, while Emilia’s work as Desdemona’s attendant gives him access to the household. Shakespeare makes this closeness dangerous: the man others trust to protect them becomes the main agent of their destruction.
