Tapping size

First, drill a hole of the correct tapping size, found in a reference table. This hole must be smaller than the nominal thread diameter: some metal must remain for the tap to cut the thread into. The nominal thread diameter corresponds to the outside diameter of the matching bolt or screw, not the drill diameter.
