Like surds
Terms with the same surd part after simplification, such as 353\sqrt{5}35 and 858\sqrt{5}85.
Like term
Terms with exactly the same letters raised to the same powers, although their numerical coefficients may differ.
Limit of accuracy
A boundary of the possible values of a quantity, determined by the accuracy with which it is given.
Line
A straight path extending indefinitely in both directions.
Linear equation
An equation whose variable terms have degree one, such as 3x+2y=113x+2y=113x+2y=11. Its graph is a straight line.
Linear function
A relationship whose graph is a straight line, usually written y=mx+cy=mx+cy=mx+c. A fixed ratio between yyy and xxx gives the special case y=mxy=mxy=mx.
Linear inequality
An inequality in which variables occur only to the first power, with no products of variables.
Linear scale factor
The multiplier taking every length in one shape to the corresponding length in a similar shape: k=new lengthoriginal lengthk=\frac{\text{new length}}{\text{original length}}k=original lengthnew length.
Linear sequence
A sequence with a constant difference between consecutive terms. Its nth term can be written as dn+bdn+bdn+b.
Line of best fit
A straight line representing the overall trend in a scatter graph, used to estimate one variable from the other.
Line of symmetry
A line in which reflecting a shape leaves the shape unchanged.
Line segment
A straight part of a line bounded by two endpoints.
Locus
The set of all points that satisfy a stated geometrical condition. The plural is loci.
Lower bound
The lower limiting value of a quantity. For a positive value rounded to the nearest unit, this endpoint is included in its error interval.
Lower quartile
The value about one-quarter of the way through ordered data, found as the median of the lower half for an ungrouped list.
Lowest common multiple (LCM)
The smallest positive integer that is a multiple of each of two or more numbers.
Magnitude
The size or length of a vector, regardless of its direction.
Major sector
The larger sector formed by two radii, with a central angle greater than 180∘180^\circ180∘.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, commonly measured in grams, kilograms or tonnes.
Mean
The sum of all data values divided by the number of values.
Mean point
The point (xˉ,yˉ)(\bar{x},\bar{y})(xˉ,yˉ), whose coordinates are the means of the horizontal and vertical values.
Measure of spread
A measure describing how widely data values vary, such as the range or interquartile range.
Median
The middle value in an ordered data set, or the mean of the two middle values when there is an even number of values.
Metric unit
A measurement system in which related units are linked by powers of ten, such as millimetres, centimetres and metres.
Midpoint
The point halfway along a line segment, found by averaging the endpoints' xxx-coordinates and averaging their yyy-coordinates.
Minor sector
The smaller sector formed by two radii, with a central angle less than 180∘180^\circ180∘.
Mirror line
The line across which a shape is reflected.
Mixed number
A number written using a whole-number part and a proper-fraction part, such as 1341\frac34143.
Modal class
The class interval with the highest frequency in a grouped frequency table.
