Bisect
To divide a line segment or angle into two equal parts.
Bivariate data
Paired values of two variables recorded for each individual or item.
Boundary line
The line separating the two sides of a graphical inequality. Its equation is found by replacing the inequality sign with an equals sign.
Box plot
A diagram showing the minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and maximum of a data set.
Cancellation
Simplifying a calculation or expression using operations that undo one another, or by dividing the numerator and denominator of a fraction by a common non-zero factor.
Capacity
The volume a container can hold, commonly measured in millilitres or litres.
Cartesian plane
A two-dimensional grid with a horizontal xxx-axis and a vertical yyy-axis, used to locate points.
Categorical data
Data recorded as categories or labels, such as favourite fruit, rather than numerical measurements.
Causation
A relationship in which a change in one variable causes a change in another.
Census
An investigation that collects information from every member of a population.
Central angle
An angle at the centre of a circle, formed by two radii.
Centre
The fixed point inside a circle that is the same distance from every point on its circumference.
Centre of enlargement
The fixed point from which movements to vertices are multiplied by the scale factor in an enlargement.
Chord
A straight line segment joining two points on the circumference of a circle.
Circumference
The boundary of a circle; also the distance around that boundary, which is the circle's perimeter.
Class boundary
An endpoint separating neighbouring classes.
Class interval
A range of values used to group numerical data in a frequency table.
Class width
The upper class boundary minus the lower class boundary.
Closed question
A question answered by choosing from supplied response options.
Coefficient
The number multiplying a variable or power of a variable. In 4x2−25x−214x^2-25x-214x2−25x−21, the coefficient of x2x^2x2 is 444.
Collinear
Lying on the same straight line.
Column vector
A representation of a two-dimensional vector as (xy)\begin{pmatrix}x\\y\end{pmatrix}(xy), with horizontal movement above vertical movement.
Common denominator
A shared denominator used to express fractions in parts of the same size before adding or subtracting them.
Common difference
The constant amount added to move from one term of an arithmetic sequence to the next; it can be negative.
Common factor
A whole number that divides each of two or more whole numbers exactly, without a remainder.
Common multiple
A number that is a multiple of each of two or more numbers.
Common ratio
The fixed multiplier in a geometric progression, found by dividing a term by the preceding non-zero term.
Complement
The event that AAA does not occur, written A′A'A′.
Completing the square
Rewriting a quadratic expression in the equivalent form a(x+p)2+qa(x+p)^2+qa(x+p)2+q, containing a squared bracket and a constant.
