Merton’s response in which an individual rejects existing goals and means and seeks to replace them with alternatives.

Revise: Social Theory and Social Structure by MertonRebellion also rejects existing goals and means, but replaces them with different ones. Rather than withdrawing, rebels seek a new society. Merton associated this response with members of a ‘rising’ social class who might organise a revolution.
Innovation retains conventional success goals. Rebellion replaces both the goals and the means; retreatism abandons both without replacing them.
