Behaviour that breaks a group's or society's norms and expectations; it need not be illegal.
Distinguish crime, which breaks criminal law, from deviance, which breaks social norms. Behaviour can be deviant without being criminal.
For Becker, explain the links between labelling, master status, exclusion and possible further deviance. Labelling does not inevitably produce a deviant career.
Compare explanations directly: for example, Merton explains pressures towards initial offending, whereas Becker explains how reactions can encourage further deviance.
