Behaviour that follows the rules or expectations of a social group or society.
Revise: Social Control MethodsConformity is behaviour that follows those expectations. Social control helps maintain social order: the relatively stable patterns of behaviour that allow social life to continue.

Formal/informal and positive/negative are different distinctions. A formal sanction can reward conformity as well as punish rule-breaking.

Revise: Social ControlSocial control means the ways people's behaviour is regulated to encourage conformity and discourage deviance. Conformity is following a group's norms or rules; deviance is breaking its expectations. Deviance need not involve breaking the law: behaviour that friends disapprove of may be deviant within that group without being criminal.
