Nagar Kirtan

A Nagar Kirtan, or religious street procession, brings worship into public space. The Nishan Sahib, the Sikh flag outside the gurdwara, may be renewed, and its flagpole washed as an expression of cleanliness and purity. Langar and voluntary service give practical expression to the equality being celebrated.

A Nagar Kirtan takes worship into the streets. The Guru Granth Sahib is carried on a float, accompanied by hymn singing. The procession is led by the Panj Piare, the ‘Five Beloved Ones’, who represent the first members of the Khalsa.
