Used by AQA and Eduqas
Paper 1
Revise: Sikh FestivalsA Gurpurb commemorates an event associated with a Guru, such as a birthday, martyrdom or accession to Guruship. The tradition developed within the early Sikh community as followers gathered to remember and honour their Gurus. Gurpurbs are opportunities to learn from their lives, rather than simply anniversaries to mark on a calendar.
Paper 3
A commemoration of an important event in a Sikh Guru’s life, especially a birth or martyrdom anniversary. Also spelt gurpurab.
Revise: FestivalsA gurpurb commemorates an important event in a Guru’s life, especially a birthday or martyrdom. Remembering a birth celebrates the Guru’s contribution; remembering a martyrdom honours someone who died for their faith or principles. Both can inspire devotion and commitment rather than simply recalling a date.
When comparing Gurpurbs in India and Great Britain, make paired comparisons about timing, scale or organisation. Avoid claiming that all communities celebrate identically.
Distinguish a gurpurb, which commemorates an event in a Guru’s life, from a mela, which is a fair or gathering.
