Revise: A ‘Golden Age’Wealthy patrons offered money and protection. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, supported Leicester’s Men, while Elizabeth established the Queen’s Men in 1583. Royal interest gave acting greater prestige.
Paper 2
An influential protector who provided support in return for loyalty or services. Ptolemy XII regarded Pompey as his Roman patron.
Revise: Rome and Egypt: Geopolitical and Economic ContextPtolemy XII regarded Pompey, one of Rome’s most powerful commanders, as his patron. Pompey’s protection helped connect the Egyptian royal family to Roman power. These personal ties could outlast an individual ruler: Ptolemy’s children inherited the relationship with Pompey.
Distinguish attitudes to theatre: audiences enjoyed it, patrons supported it, the Crown supervised it, and Puritans and local authorities raised different objections.
