The incorporation of a territory into another country, as when Texas became part of the United States in 1845.
Revise: Geography of North AmericaThe annexation of Texas in 1845 and the Mexican-American War of 1846–1848 show its significance. Expansionists supported extending American control; the war ended with Mexico ceding California and extensive southwestern territory. Expansion was achieved through diplomacy as well as warfare, as the Oregon Treaty demonstrated.
