Revise: A ‘Golden Age’This fitted the Great Chain of Being: if social rank formed part of a God-given order, outward appearance should reinforce that order rather than blur it. There was therefore a tension between growing prosperity and established hierarchy. Wealth gave people greater opportunities to display success, while restrictions attempted to keep those displays appropriate to their rank.
