A territory governed by a duke or duchess. Normandy was a duchy held by the kings of England during Richard I’s reign and the beginning of John’s reign.

Before William invaded England, he ruled Normandy, a duchy in northern France. The Normans had Scandinavian origins: their name came from ‘Northmen’. Their society, however, was not simply a continuation of Viking society.
