Paper 2
A grant of land held from a lord in return for agreed obligations.
Revise: The Feudal System and LandholdingA grant of land, called a fief, was not simply an unconditional gift: its holder had to fulfil obligations to keep it. These obligations varied according to their position in society. For powerful landholders, they included providing military service; for peasants, they included working for their lord.
Land held by a vassal in return for service to a lord; also called a feud.
