The middle value when data are arranged in numerical order; with an even number of values, it is the mean of the two middle values.

Revise: Descriptive Statistics: Central Tendency, Spread and PercentagesThe median is the middle value in an ordered list. There are 11 diameters, so the sixth value, 6 cm, is the median. If there were an even number of observations, we would add the two middle values and divide by two.

Put individual values in numerical order before finding the median or quartiles. Show which values you used.
Put ungrouped values in order before finding the median. With an even number of values, average the two middle values.
Keep units: the mean, median, range and inter-quartile range have the same units as the original measurements.

The middle values are 4 mm and 6 mm, giving a median of 5 mm. Both 3 mm and 6 mm occur twice, more often than any other value, so there are two modes. These are constructed teaching values, not recorded rainfall observations.
