Paper 2
The replacement of work previously done by people with work done by machines.
Revise: The UK's Shifting Economic Employment StructureMechanisation allows machines to do work previously carried out by people. In farming, machinery reduces the labour needed to produce food. In factories, machines can carry out production tasks with fewer workers.
The replacement of human labour with machinery.
Specification 8.1a · Paper 2, Paper 3
The use of machinery, such as tractors and combine harvesters, to carry out farming tasks.
Revise: Impact of Resource DemandMechanisation replaces or assists human labour with machines. Tractors carry out tasks such as cultivating soil, while combine harvesters collect crops. These machines allow farmers to work large areas and complete tasks more quickly.
For mechanisation, explain changes directly associated with machines, such as removing hedgerows to make larger fields. Fertilisers and pesticides are separate farming inputs.
