GCSE Geography · key term
The removal of forest so that land can be used for another purpose.
Used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR
Specification 3.1.1.4, 3.1.2.2 · Paper 1
The removal of forest, often to make land available for farming or other uses.
Revise: Causes of Climate ChangeAgriculture can also involve clearing forests for crops or grazing. This connects agricultural expansion with deforestation: one activity can contribute to climate change through several linked processes.
Specification 3.5, 3.7, 6.1 · Paper 1, Paper 2
The removal of trees so that forest land can be used for another purpose.
Revise: Economic and Social Causes of DeforestationDeforestation means removing trees so that the land can be used for another purpose. To explain its causes, think about both what replaces the forest and why people want that new land use.
The human-caused, long-term removal of forest or woodland so that the land is converted to another use.
The clearing or removal of forest.
Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
The removal of forests, often to make space for crops or livestock. It reduces carbon dioxide uptake by trees and releases carbon dioxide if the trees are burned.
The removal of trees from an area of land.
The removal of forest so that the land is no longer forested.
The felling and clearance of trees from an area of forest.
The removal of forest cover, usually so that the land can be used for another purpose.
The removal of forest so that the land is converted to another use.
Specification 2.1b, 4.2b, 8.1a · Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3
The removal of forests, which reduces the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and can release carbon stored in vegetation.
Revise: Natural and Human CausesDeforestation therefore has a double effect: it can release stored carbon and reduces the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Agriculture also affects several gases, rather than producing only methane.
The removal of forest cover.
A falling rate of deforestation does not mean forest cover is increasing: forest may still be disappearing, but more slowly.
Develop causes of deforestation into chains: population growth increases demand for housing, so woodland may be cleared for building land.
For an explanation, link the activity to a process and then an environmental change: deforestation removes vegetation, leaving soil exposed to erosion.
