Revise: Global Resource Demand and Population TheoriesRising affluence means people become wealthier and can afford more goods and services. More households may buy electrical appliances such as washing machines, increasing demand for electricity and water. As countries become richer, consumption of meat and dairy products also tends to rise.
Wealth that gives people greater ability to buy goods and services.
Distinguish total demand from demand per person: population growth increases the number of consumers, while rising affluence can increase each person's consumption.
Link each cause to a resource and a mechanism, rather than simply listing population growth, affluence, urbanisation and industrialisation.
Explain a chain of effects: greater affluence → ability to afford insulation → less heating needed → lower fossil-fuel use and emissions.
