Forming a shape by introducing molten material into a mould and allowing it to solidify.

Revise: Shaping, casting and joining metalsCasting forms a new shape from molten metal. Brazing and welding join separate parts, allowing larger structures to be built from smaller pieces.
A forming process in which molten metal enters a mould cavity, then cools and solidifies into its shape.
Link a process choice to the required shape: turning for cylindrical profiles, milling for slots or flat faces, and casting for complex moulded shapes.
Link a process to the component being made: milling can produce an accurately dimensioned slot; casting can form a complex housing.
When discussing casting quality, name a specific defect, such as an air pocket or incomplete filling, and explain its effect on the component.
