Revise: Roman Military Equipment and Battle TacticsThe testudo, meaning ‘tortoise’, made collective use of the scutum. Soldiers at the front and sides held shields outwards, while those inside raised shields overhead. Together, the shields formed a protective shell, useful when advancing under missile attack, particularly towards a defended position.
