Pilum

The pilum was a heavy throwing spear used before hand-to-hand fighting. It could kill or wound an opponent, but even a throw that struck a shield could be useful. A spear lodged in a shield made it awkward to handle, reducing the enemy’s protection before the Romans closed in.
