Revise: Legionary Organization and the Legionary FortressThe legion's principal emblem was its eagle, the aquila, entrusted to the prestigious first cohort. Individual centuries also had standards carried by standard-bearers. A century's standard-bearer, the signifer, had financial responsibilities for the men's pay and savings as well as carrying the standard.
