Individual soldiers might win single fights, but highly disciplined formations are what win wars. Roman commanders relied on specific structural shapes to adapt to different battlefield threats.
The testudo (tortoise) was a defensive formation primarily used during sieges or when under heavy fire. Soldiers in the front rank held their scuta forward, while those in the interior ranks held theirs above their heads, overlapping them like roof tiles. This created a protective shell that was nearly impenetrable to light missiles like arrows, allowing the unit to approach enemy fortifications safely.
The cuneus (wedge formation) was an offensive shock tactic used to pierce and split enemy battle lines. The unit formed a V-shape with the most experienced soldiers at the "point." By concentrating force on a narrow section of the enemy line, the Romans could shatter their formation and cause psychological panic. This was famously used at the Battle of Watling Street (60/61 AD) to split Boudicca’s numerically superior army.

Instead of putting all their best fighters in the front line, Republican Roman commanders kept their most experienced veterans in reserve. This structure, known as the triplex acies, consisted of three distinct lines of heavy infantry.
These lines were divided into tactical units called maniples, arranged in a staggered, checkerboard pattern called a quincunx. The strength of the triplex acies was its endurance; fresh troops could rotate in to relieve exhausted frontlines, while the quincunx gaps allowed the army to navigate hilly terrain without breaking formation. However, it required extreme discipline to execute rotations under pressure, and its reliance on dense packing made it vulnerable to envelopment, as seen at the Battle of Cannae.
When you are consistently losing battles at sea, the most logical solution is to turn a naval battle into a land battle. During the First Punic War, the Romans had to counter the superior Carthaginian navy and their diekplous tactic, which involved sailing through lines to smash enemy oars.
The corvus was devastatingly effective in combat, winning the battles of Mylae (260 BC) and Ecnomus (256 BC) by capturing intact ships and crews. However, evaluating its overall design reveals a fatal flaw: it made the quinqueremes top-heavy, contributing to massive fleet losses during storms before being replaced.
Students often 'double count' armour protection. You must be specific: the scutum protects the limbs and front, the lorica segmentata protects the torso, and the galea protects the head and neck.
When a question uses the command word 'Evaluate', examiners expect you to give BOTH the strengths and the weaknesses of a tactic, followed by a judgement of its overall effectiveness.
