Revise: Nephron Structure and UltrafiltrationA nephron filters blood and then processes the filtered liquid to form urine. Its first part is a cup-shaped Bowman’s capsule in the kidney’s outer region, the cortex. Inside the cup is a knot of blood capillaries called the glomerulus.

Revise: Structure of the kidneyStart in the cortex at Bowman’s capsule, a cup-shaped structure surrounding a cluster of tiny blood vessels called the glomerulus. Fluid filtered from the blood enters the capsule. From there it passes into the proximal convoluted tubule.
Trace the two routes separately: filtrate enters Bowman’s capsule, while blood cells and large proteins remain in the capillaries.
Do not call the liquid in Bowman’s capsule urine: it is filtrate, which is modified as it travels through the nephron.
Trace the tubule in order. Bowman’s capsule comes before the proximal convoluted tubule; the loop of Henlé dips into the medulla before the pathway reaches a collecting duct.
