Inverse sine
The calculator operation sin−1\sin^{-1}sin−1 that finds an angle from its sine value.
Inverse trigonometric function
A calculator operation, such as sin−1\sin^{-1}sin−1, used to recover an angle from its trigonometric ratio.
Isosceles triangle
A triangle with at least two equal sides.
Iteration
A repeated process in which the output from one step becomes the input to the next step.
Iteration formula
A rule such as xn+1=g(xn)x_{n+1}=g(x_n)xn+1=g(xn) that generates each new value from the preceding value.
Iterative formula
A formula such as xn+1=f(xn)x_{n+1}=f(x_n)xn+1=f(xn) that defines each value from an earlier value.
Key point
A point such as an intercept, turning point or endpoint that can be transformed first to help construct the new graph.
Kinematics
The study of motion using quantities such as distance, time, speed and acceleration.
Kite
A quadrilateral with two pairs of equal adjacent sides.
Length
A measure of distance from one point to another, expressed in units such as millimetres, metres or kilometres.
Like terms
Terms that have exactly the same variable part, such as 3x3x3x and −5x-5x−5x.
Limits of accuracy
The lower and upper boundaries that restrict the possible exact value of a rounded quantity.
Line
A straight path extending indefinitely in both directions.
Linear equation
An equation whose variables have highest power 1 and whose graph is a straight line.
Linear function
A relationship whose graph is a straight line and which can be written in the form y=mx+cy=mx+cy=mx+c.
Linear inequality
An inequality in which each variable has power 1 and variables are not multiplied together.
Linear scale factor
The multiplier that changes every length in one similar figure into the corresponding length in another.
Linear sequence
A sequence with a constant first difference and an nth-term expression of the form dn+cdn+cdn+c.
Line of symmetry
A line that divides a shape into two matching reflected halves.
Line segment
A part of a straight line with two fixed endpoints whose distance apart can be measured.
Locus
A set of points that satisfy a given condition.
Lower bound
The smallest boundary value that a rounded quantity can take; for ordinary rounding it is included in the error interval.
Lower bound of a result
A value found using limits of accuracy so that no possible result lies below it.
Lowest common multiple (LCM)
The smallest positive integer that is a multiple of each of the given numbers.
Magnitude
The size or length of a vector, without reference to its direction.
Major arc
The longer arc between two points on a circle, associated with a central angle greater than 180∘180^\circ180∘.
Mapping notation
The notation f:x↦2x+5f:x\mapsto 2x+5f:x↦2x+5 states that function fff maps an input xxx to the output 2x+52x+52x+5.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object, commonly expressed in grams or kilograms.
Mathematical model
A mathematical representation of a situation or process.
