A text file that stores table-like data, with commas separating fields and usually one record on each line.

An explanatory note in code that is not executed as an instruction.

A translator that translates a whole high-level program into machine code before it is executed, producing an executable.

A technique for reducing the size of a file so that fewer bits are needed to store or transmit it.

Two or more devices connected together so that they can exchange data and share resources.

Joining strings together to form a single string.

An expression whose Boolean result determines whether an action, such as a branch of an if statement, is carried out.

A loop whose continuation depends on a condition, rather than a predetermined number of repetitions.

Freely given, specific and informed agreement, expressed through a positive action, to a particular use of personal data. It must be possible to withdraw it.

A named value intended to remain unchanged while a program runs.

A set of connections carrying control signals, such as read and write signals, between components.

The order in which a program executes its instructions.

The CPU component that decodes instructions and sends control signals to coordinate their execution and the movement of data.

An automatic legal right protecting original creative work, including software code, and allowing its owner to control copying, adaptation and distribution.

A file whose data has been damaged so that it cannot be processed correctly.

A loop whose number of repetitions is determined by a count.

Central processing unit: the processor that fetches, decodes and executes program instructions.

A set of connections carrying instructions and data in either direction between the CPU and main memory.

Reducing the size of a file so that it requires less storage space and less time to transfer.

The organisation or person responsible for deciding why and how personal data is processed.

Legal rules and organisational measures that protect personal data and govern how it is collected and used.

An organised collection of data that allows related values to be stored, accessed and manipulated.

The living person whom personal data identifies or relates to.

A classification of data that determines the kind of values it can hold and the operations that are appropriate for it.

The process of identifying, locating and correcting errors in a computer program.

A base-10 number system that uses the digits 0–9; also called denary.

Breaking a problem down into smaller, more manageable problems whose solutions can be combined to solve the original problem.
