AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy key terms

Force exerted per unit area. Gas pressure results from molecules colliding with a surface.

An animal that is eaten by a predator.

The input coil of a transformer, connected to the incoming electrical supply.

A consumer that eats a producer.

The likelihood of an outcome, expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage.

An organism that makes biological molecules rather than obtaining them by eating other organisms; usually a green plant or alga that makes glucose by photosynthesis.

A substance formed in a chemical reaction.

The money remaining from sales revenue after costs have been subtracted.

A hormone produced by the ovaries after ovulation that maintains the uterus lining and inhibits FSH and LH.

A cell whose genetic material is not enclosed within a nucleus. Bacterial cells are prokaryotic cells.

The share of a total made up by one part, often expressed as a fraction or percentage.

An enzyme that breaks down proteins into amino acids.

The production of proteins by joining amino acids together.

A single-celled eukaryotic organism, meaning its cell contains a nucleus. Some protists are pathogens, including those that cause malaria.

A subatomic particle found in the nucleus with a relative electrical charge of +1.

The stage of development when reproductive hormones cause the body to become sexually mature and secondary sex characteristics to develop.

A grid showing the possible combinations of genetic material from the parents' gametes at fertilisation.

A single element or compound that is not mixed with any other substance.

Water containing only $\mathrm{H_2O}$ molecules, with no other substances mixed into it.

A frame enclosing a known area, used to sample organisms such as plants or slow-moving animals.

A test that indicates whether a substance is present in a sample rather than measuring its exact amount.

Expressing a quantity numerically, usually with a unit, such as water use in litres or waste production in kilograms.

The extraction of rock or other materials from the ground in an open excavation.

A measure of the risk of harm resulting from exposure of the body to radiation. It is measured in sieverts (Sv), often expressed as millisieverts (mSv).

The unwanted presence of materials containing radioactive atoms on other materials.

The process in which an unstable atomic nucleus emits radiation and changes to become more stable.

Continuous movement with no overall preferred direction; collisions change the directions in which gas molecules travel.
