The share of a total made up by one part, often expressed as a fraction or percentage.

Revise: Atmospheric Gas ProportionsTo describe its composition, we give the proportion of each gas. A percentage tells us how much of the total that gas makes up: 80% means about 80 parts out of every 100.
Use ‘about’ or ‘approximately’ with 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen: these are rounded proportions, not exact values.
Describe the proportions as relatively constant for 200 million years, not completely unchanged.
