Revise: Knowledge and UnderstandingSocialisation is the process through which people learn the norms, values and behaviour expected in their society or group. Early learning within families is primary socialisation. Learning through schools, peers and other influences is secondary socialisation.
A belief about what is important or desirable, such as fairness or achievement.
Link each named thinker to a specific argument: Durkheim to shared norms, values and social solidarity; Parsons to the bridge between family and society, achieved status and meritocracy.
Compare perspectives on the same issue. For example, ask whether the values taught at school benefit everyone, the ruling class or men.
Distinguish a value from a norm: a value is a general belief about what matters; a norm is an expectation about behaviour in a particular situation.
