On 10 Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims return to Mina and throw seven small pebbles, one at a time, at the largest of the jamarat. These are the structures commonly described as pillars. Stoning symbolises rejecting the devil and temptation, recalling Ibrahim’s refusal to be turned away from obedience to Allah.
