Id-ul-Ghadeer and Ashura both connect religious observance with the family of the Prophet Muhammad. For Shi’a Muslims, Ali and his descendants are not simply important historical figures: they are Imams, the rightful spiritual leaders of the Muslim community. Ali was Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law; Hussain was Ali’s son and Muhammad’s grandson.
