A Muslim prayer leader; the term can also refer to a religious leader within a Muslim community.

A title meaning leader. In the Shi’a doctrine of the Imamate, an Imam is an appointed spiritual leader; in everyday Muslim worship, an imam can be a prayer leader.

Ali is therefore recognised as the first Imam in Shi’a Islam.

A Muslim prayer leader; the term can also refer to other forms of religious leadership in Islam.

A Muslim who leads congregational prayer; the term can also refer to a religious or community leader.

An imam leads congregational prayer. Traditionally, men lead mixed congregations, and most Muslim communities do not permit women to lead men in prayer. Many scholars regard male leadership as part of the requirements for valid congregational prayer.

Explain significance by linking a belief to its effect: belief in the Imams’ infallibility gives Shi’a Muslims confidence in their guidance.

Distinguish an appointed Shi’a Imam from an imam who leads congregational prayer.

Do not describe the Imams as prophets or divine beings: Muhammad is believed to be the final prophet.
