Revise: Divorce and RemarriageAn annulment is different. It is a ruling that a valid marriage never existed. For example, the Church may examine whether both people entered the marriage freely and with the necessary commitment at the time of the wedding.

Distinguish a civil divorce, which legally ends a marriage, from a Catholic annulment, which declares that a marriage was never valid.
Distinguish separation, divorce and annulment. An annulment is not simply a Catholic divorce.
Divorce ends a valid marriage; annulment concerns its validity. Separation does not itself end the marriage.

An annulment is different again. It declares that a valid marriage did not exist from the beginning; it does not end a valid marriage merely because the relationship has become unhappy. For example, being below the required age may mean that a marriage was not valid.
A legal ruling concerning a marriage’s invalidity. A void marriage was invalid from the outset; a voidable marriage has legal status until annulled.
