Independent variable

The variable that a researcher changes or manipulates in an experiment to investigate its effect on the dependent variable.

In an experiment, the independent variable (IV) is what the researcher changes. Its conditions are the different situations being compared. The dependent variable (DV) is the outcome the researcher measures.
