Specification 4.3.3.2 · Paper 1
Increasing the volume occupied by a gas.
Specification 14.16P, 14.18P · Paper 2
An increase in the volume occupied by a substance.
Revise: Compression and ExpansionCompression or expansion therefore requires a movable or flexible boundary, or the gas must enter a differently sized space.
Specification P1.3c · Paper 1 (Foundation), Paper 3 (Higher)
An increase in the volume occupied by a gas as its particles move further apart.
Revise: Compression and expansionCompression or expansion depends on the pressures acting on the boundaries of the gas. If the pressure pushing inwards is greater than the pressure pushing outwards, the boundary moves inwards and the gas is compressed. If the outward pressure is greater, the boundary moves outwards and the gas expands.
After calculating, check the direction of change: compression should increase pressure, while expansion should decrease it.
In a particle-model explanation, link the change in collision frequency with the walls to the change in force per unit area. Do not suggest that expansion removes particles.
For an expansion, reverse every link in the explanation: longer average distance between wall collisions, lower collision rate and lower pressure.
