Build the causal chain explicitly: smaller volume → particles travel a shorter average distance between wall collisions → collision rate increases → force per unit area increases → pressure increases.
For an expansion, reverse every link in the explanation: longer average distance between wall collisions, lower collision rate and lower pressure.
