Revise: Antagonistic muscle actionThe main muscle producing or controlling a particular movement is the agonist, also called the prime mover. Its opposing muscle is the antagonist.
Paper 1
The muscle or muscle group that opposes the agonist. In a simple antagonistic movement, it relaxes and lengthens to allow the agonist to produce the movement.
Revise: Muscle Roles in MovementThe antagonist is the opposing muscle. It relaxes and lengthens to allow that movement. This coordination is called antagonistic muscle action.
Identify the joint movement and the phase of the action before naming the agonist and antagonist.
For a movement-analysis answer, name the joint action, identify the agonist and antagonist, and state which contracts and which relaxes.
Agonist and antagonist are roles, not permanent muscle names. Their roles reverse when they produce the opposite movement.
