Paper 1
Revise: Antagonistic muscle actionThe main muscle producing or controlling a particular movement is the agonist, also called the prime mover. Its opposing muscle is the antagonist.
Paper 1
The muscle or muscle group that contracts to produce a particular movement; also called the prime mover.
Revise: Muscle Roles in MovementThe agonist, or prime mover, is the muscle that contracts to produce a particular movement. In a simple movement such as bending the elbow to lift a weight, it contracts and shortens, pulling on the bone.
Identify the joint movement and the phase of the action before naming the agonist and antagonist.
For a movement-analysis answer, name the joint action, identify the agonist and antagonist, and state which contracts and which relaxes.
Agonist and antagonist are roles, not permanent muscle names. Their roles reverse when they produce the opposite movement.
